Professor S. Guptan Nair, who lived in the street of ranni lane is one of the eminent critic and scholar in malayalam literature. He has contributed immesely to malayalam through his writings. It is matter of high dignity the prestiege that such a great person has lived among us in the street of rannilane.
Beyond his eminence in the field of malayalam literature, he was a good human being, who used to participate, inagurate and precided over lots of cultural and socio-economic activies in the community.
Guptan Nair's dialogue — be it on student politics, the concept of complexity, or that with E.M.S. Namboodiripad on `elitist' literature — enriched the State's socio-cultural life. Guptan Nair had varied interests.
He played badminton, enjoyed music and classical arts, gave a new dimension to lexicography in Malayalam and was even an actor.
He had played a part in the Malayalam version of Ibsen's `Enemy of the People,' staged at VJT Hall in Thiruvananthapuram in the late 1940s,".
Prof. Guptan Nair was a recipient of Kendra Sahitya Academy award and Kerala government's highest literary prize Ezhuthachan Puraskaram. He also served as president of Kerala Sahitya Academy.
The Professor has passed on the 6th of February 2006 due to some health problems in a private hostpital in trivandrum.
His demise is big loss to the malayalam literature and the malayalee community.
